SIDG: Events for the Fourth Weekend in May

It’s a busy Memorial Day weekend out on the Sea Islands.

FRIDAY (THE 23rd)

For the Terrace Theater’s newest offerings, scroll down to ALL WEEKEND LONG.

9am: On Wadmalaw, Ambrose Family Farm is open for u-pick strawberries until 5pm.

10am: **Hey Parents** On Edisto, the Serpentarium is open until 4pm. This is an indoor zoo dedicated to all the Lowcountry’s cold-blooded natives like snakes, alligators, and turtles. Demonstrations allow kids to “pet” these creatures safely as they held by trained handlers.

11am: On Johns (Main Road heading to Savannah Highway), the Main Road Farmers Market, brought to you by Charleston Petal Pushers, is open until 6pm. They are having a plant sale (bedding, hanging, tropicals) right now to make way for all the peaches, tomatoes, and other produce on the way as we speak. MRFM’s regular inventory includes fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, frozen prepared food (like yummy Bertolini pasta and pasta dishes), natural compost fertilizer, muscadine wreaths, tropical plants, local grits, local honey, Amish jams, and homemade boiled peanuts. Please bring cash or check to make purchases. I had the privilege to talk to the owners Chris DeStefano and Lindsay Dickson recently, and the story appeared in last week’s West Of Newspaper.

4pm: On James, Charleston Pour House, it’s Jimmy Landry and Friends on the deck. This is a free show. Check out the Lot’s new deck menu!

6pm: On Johns, at Freshfields Village, it’s a Memorial Day Weekend concert series. Tonight, the Java Band is playing, Saturday is 1960s-present cover/party band Suckerpunch, and Sunday is Gracious Day.

6pm: On Folly, at Loggerheads, Soulfish Duo is playing.

8pm: On Johns, at Seanachai, The Hungry Monks are playing. This bar doesn’t serve food, but you can order Southern General food from your barstool. The General also has two happy hours: one you might expect from 4-7pm, and a second one at 10.

8pm: On James, at Brickhouse Kitchen, it’s Jeannie Wiggins and the Missing Linc playing.

9:30pm: On James, at the Charleston Pour House, the Earphunk with Mama’s Love is playing. Show is $10 in advance, $13 at the door. Doors open at 9. See website for tickets and more information. Check out the Lot’s new deck menu!

10pm: On Folly, at Loggerheads, it’s Dan’s Tramp Stamp and the Moneybags.

10pm: On James, the Bohemian Bull has Weight Station playing. PS-Don’t forget, the Bohemian Bull serves food late into the evening.

SATURDAY (the 24th)

10am: **Hey Parents!**On James Island, Splash Zone at the James Island County Park is open today until 6pm. General admission is $20, Seniors 60 and up $9.99, under 48″ $14.99 a person, children 2 and under free. If you anticipate multiple visits all summer long, check out the splash pass. [NOTE: the 48″ height is required for several large slides, see the splash pass link for details.] In North Charleston, at Wannamaker County Park, Whirlin’ Waters is open today until 6pm, and in Mount Pleasant, at Palmetto Islands County Park, Splash Island is open today until 6pm.

10am: On Johns, The Homegrown Johns Island Farmers Market is held near the Main and Maybank intersection next to Dr. Anthony Ross’ Island Chiropractic. It has 50 vendors, including local farms, artisans, and specialty food products. There are also food trucks and live music.

12pm: On James, Tradesman Brewing Co.’s tasting room is open until 8pm.

12pm: On Wadmalaw, at Irvin-House Vineyards, it’s Sippin’ Saturday with music by Kristi Starr and Gary Hewitt and food by The Farmers Wife. Please bring cash, lawn chairs, blankets, and bug spray. But please, no coolers.

12pm: The Charleston Tea Plantation will be holding its First Flush Festeaval. The Avett Bros. are headlining, other acts include Stoplight Observations, The Luke Cunningham Band, Atlas Road Crew, Uncle Mingo, Tyler Boone Band, Ben Fagan and the Holy City Hooligans, and The Executives. Tickets are $37.50 in advance and $45 day of show. VIP tickets are $100. Shows start at 1pm.

4pm: On James, at the Charleston Pour House, Cane Creek String Band is playing. Show is free. Check out the Lot’s new deck menu!

6pm: On Folly, at Loggerheads, Howard Dlugasch is playing.

6pm: On Johns, at Freshfields Village, it’s a Memorial Day Weekend concert series. Tonight a 1960s-present cover/party band Suckerpunch is playing.

Shrimp Records is a lineup of local music Cary Ann Hearst, Michael Trent, Bill Carson, Joel T. Hamilton, Jonny Gray, Michael Flynn, Ron Wiltrout, Andy Dixon, Teenage Eagle, and more special guests. Show is $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Doors open at 8. See website for tickets and more information.

SUNDAY (the 25th)

8-11am: On James, the Coastal Cyclists will be cycling from James, to Kiawah and back, about 40 miles total. Please drive and pass carefully.

11am: On James, the Sunday Brunch Farmers Market features food trucks, local farmers, and local vendors. Live music is also on site. Now open until 2pm.

3pm: On Folly, at Loggerheads, Yellowknife is playing.

4pm: On James, at the Charleston Pour House, it’s Sunday Phunday with Runaway Gin playing Phish covers on the deck. This show is free. Check out the Lot’s new deck menu! There is no later act scheduled at this time.

6pm: On Folly, at the Grill and Island Bar, it’s Jazz on the Edge. Food and drink specials, and an open jazz jam by over 22 local jazz talents. Click link for details.

6pm: On Johns, at Freshfields Village, it’s a Memorial Day Weekend concert series. Tonight Gracious Day is playing.

6pm: On Folly, at Loggerheads, One Kool Blow is playing.

9:30pm: On James, at the Charleston Pour House, it’s the Dead 27s album release party. Special guests include Josh Roberts, the Hinges, and Shane Pruitt. It’s $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Doors open at 9.

10pm: On Folly, at Surf Bar, it’s the Sunday Sessions. If you’re a musician come out and jam!

10pm: On Folly, at Loggerheads, Hibachi Heroes are playing.

MONDAY (the 26th)

4pm: On James, at the Charleston Pour House,it’s Elise Testone (American Idol S11) and Friends. This is a free show.

6pm: On Folly, at Loggerheads, BYOG acoustic night. If you play acoustic guitar, come on down!

10pm: On Folly, at Loggerheads, Mack to the Future are playing.

ALL WEEKEND LONG

On James, at the Terrace Theater, the following films open today: Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Emily Watson, Matthew Goode), The Immigrant (Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix), and Chef (Robert Downey Jr., Jon Favreau). Also playing is Million Dollar Arm (Jon Hamm, Aasif Mandvi, Bill Paxton, Alan Aarkin, and Lake Bell). It’s about a sports agent who goes to India seeking a cricket player who could be the next big American baseball pitcher. Click titles for the trailers.

If spring tends to aggravate your allergies, don’t forget the tissues, allergy meds, and eye drops. For dawn and dusk hours, bring bug spray as the “no-see-ums” (a.k.a sand flies, midgies) are already back and spring rains (like we had just this week) mean the mosquitos aren’t far behind.

10pm: On Folly, at Loggerheads, it’s Bobby Hogg and Friends.

10pm: On James, at ChaCha’s Tequila Bar, it’s the Electro Island Dance Party with beats by DJ Skitch. Pick up tickets for Sunday’s Sip and Slide event for just $10.

SATURDAY (the 17th)

8am: On Johns, at Freshfields Village, it’s Cars and Coffee at Java Java.

8am: On Edisto, there’s the first-ever Raft Race from Big Bay Creek to Pressleys at the Marina. There’s also a Raft Run at 1pm. Call Pressleys for more info. There’s also an Arts and Crafts show at the Edistonian.

11am: In Mount Pleasant, at Palmetto Islands County Park, it’s an outdoor sports sampler day. Please wear close-toed shoes to enjoy all the activities, which include archery, rock climbing, kayaking, standup paddleboarding, and slacklining (think tightrope walking, but the tightrope isn’t tight.) All attendees under 15 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. $5 for kids 12 and under, $10 for ages 13 and up.

12pm: In Downtown Charleston, it’s the Charleston Beer Garden at Brittlebank Park. Benefitting James Island’s Pet Helpers, this event has 30+ beers, a Beer Olympics, a Charleston City Paper VIP Grove, an Earth Fare beer school, and live music all day long. Click link for ticket information.

12pm: On James, Tradesman Brewing Co.’s tasting room is open until 8pm.

12pm: On James, at Midtown Productions, it’s the second performance of Douglas Clinton’s The Life and Times of Princess Sophia, featuring students in Midtown’s youth acting classes.

3pm: **Hey Parents**On Johns, at the County Library, its a Fancy Nancy reading party.

4pm: On James, the Bohemian Bull has a Bikini Fashion Show, grilled hot dogs and hamburgers, and the Yellowknife band playing.

4pm: On James, at the Charleston Pour House, Hungry Monks play Jerry Garcia covers. Show is free.

6pm: On Folly, at Loggerheads, Howard Dlugasch is playing.

6:30pm: It’s Preakness time on NBC, let’s see if California Chrome can win this one, too! Find your favorite sports bar (on James I suggest Smoky Oak Taproom or the Lowdown; on Johns, the Southern General, New Moon Pizzeria; closer to Kiawah, King Street Grille) or watch from home, and maybe try a Black-Eyed Susan cocktail. The recipe has had many changes over the decades, it is named for Maryland’s state flower, which echoes the colors of the state’s unique English baron-style flag.

8pm: On Johns, at Seanachai, J.A.N.E. is playing. This bar doesn’t serve food, but you can order Southern General food from your barstool. The General also has two happy hours: one you might expect from 4-7 pm, and a second one at 10.

8pm: On James, at the Charleston Pour House, it’s Inertia Live: A live conceptual electronic dance music performance featuring Klipart, DjTrav, Jake B, LAZRZ, Arenaissance, Pauld Eagle, DJ Skitch, and Ynot. Show is $10 at the door.

10pm: On Folly, at Loggerheads, The Southern Belles band are playing.

11am: On James, at the Charleston Pour House, it’s the Oak Grove Montessori School Benefit Miss Hazel and Friends of the Hungry Monks and Yost will be playing. There is a jump castle and a mechanical bull. $10 minimum donation.

2pm: On James, at ChaCha’s Tequila Bar, it’s a Sip and Slide party. There’s a Bikini contest, giant slides, and drink specials. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door.

2:30pm: On James, Cup Fine Coffee and Roasters features their third Sunday coffee lecture and tasting. This Sunday, varieties are gesha, catura, and typica.

3pm: On James, at Midtown Productions, it’s the final show for Douglas Clinton’s The Life and Times of Princess Sophia, featuring students in Midtown’s youth acting classes.

3pm: In West Ashley, at Tin Roof, there is a benefit concert featuring local acts Skye Paige, First World Problem, Dallas Baker, the 33s, Dumb Doctors, Lily Slay, Dirty Circus, and Slay. This event benefit’s the late Cassie V. Perkins’ son Brandon and Postpartum Support Charleston. $10 cover.

3pm: On Folly, at Loggerheads, Yellowknife is playing.

4pm: On James, at the Charleston Pour House, it’s Sunday Phunday with Runaway Gin playing Phish covers on the deck. This show is free. Check out the new deck bar. There is no later act scheduled at this time.

4pm: On Johns, at Seanachai, there’s a Paddy Wagon party. Gerry is unveiling a party bus in Seanachai’s bright and dark green color scheme. Charleston Choo foodtruck will be on site.

6pm: On Folly, at the Grill and Island Bar, it’s Jazz on the Edge. Food and drink specials, and an open jazz jam by over 22 local jazz talents. Click link for details.

ALL WEEKEND LONG

On James, at the Terrace Theater, the following film opens today: Million Dollar Arm (Jon Hamm, Aasif Mandvi, Bill Paxton, Alan Aarkin, and Lake Bell). It’s about a sports agent who goes to India seeking a cricket player who could be the next big American baseball pitcher. This film’s opening is a tie-in with our local Riverdogs team. Come see the movie Saturday, and you are in the running to win one of four pairs of box seats to a future Riverdogs game. Also playing are the comedy Fading Gigolo (John Turturro, Woody Allen, Liev Schrieber, Vanessa Paradis, Sharon Stone, Sofia Vergara), the post-WWII drama The Railway Man (Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman), and the unlikely female friends comedy The Other Woman (Leslie Mann, Cameron Diaz, and Kate Upton).

SIDG: What’s Ahead on the Sea Islands and Around Town, May 20, 2014 edition

I thought it would cheer up Monday doldrums to share weekly food specials and some activities on the horizon. ‘So here I go!

WEEKLY FOOD SPECIALS:

MONDAYS:

On James, at the Brick House Kitchen it’s Food, Beverage, and Entertainer Discount night.

On James, at Smoky Oak Taproom, Mexi-Mondays mean margarita pitchers and steak and shrimp fajitas. If you “Like” their Facebook page, there are budget-friendly dinner specials announced all week long.

On Seabrook, Red’s Ice House at Bohicket has all you can eat crab legs on Mondays for $29, Happy hour 4-7pm, and Dave Landeo Band performing live.

TUESDAYS:

On James, How Art Thou Café has a beer tasting every Tuesday. This week, Big Daddy Cade is back playing his live Blues.

On James, at the Brick House Kitchen, it’s a Drum Circle Night followed by a Graham Whorley show and an artists’ market.

On James, La Tabella has $4 specialty house wines.

On James, at the Stag Erin, it’s Tie-Dye Tuesday. Wear Tie-Dye, get a shot. It’s also trivia night and taco night.

On James, Melvin’s Barbeque has half-price burgers tonight.

May 24th: The Charleston Tea Plantation will be holding its First Flush Festeaval. The Avett Bros. are headlining, other acts include Stoplight Observations, The Luke Cunningham Band, Atlas Road Crew, Uncle Mingo, Tyler Boone Band, Ben Fagan and the Holy City Hooligans, and The Executives. Tickets are $37.50 in advance and $45 day of show. VIP tickets are $100.

May 24th: Downtown, the March Against Monsanto starts at 11am on Ann and Meeting Streets.

May 31st: Downtown, Keep Charleston Beautiful’s Green and Lean 5k is happening at Brittlebank Park. Click the link for more information. Keep Charleston Beautiful is an anti-litter organization that hosts cleanups all over town all year long.

May 31st: On Johns, at Legare Farms, it’s a Electric Foam 5k from 7-10pm. This is a fun run meaning it’s not timed. Come in costume if you wish. It is followed by a dance party.

May 31st: On Wadmalaw, at Irvin House Vineyards, it’s Winestock from 12-5pm. The theme is the Age of Aquarius, so wear your best hippie costume for a chance to win prizes. Bring lawn chairs and blankets. There is live music, food, and tastings of wine and vodka. Admission is $5 for adults, children are free.

Just a PSA, the kids will be out of school the first week of June. College students are already out now in May. This means more all-day traffic on the roads with newer drivers, younger teens in golf carts, smaller children out playing on foot, on bikes, scooters, and skateboards. Please drive with extra caution from now until they return to school in mid-August.

Just one more PSA: On summer nights, unlocked cars are a super-easy target for spare change in the console and other valuables. Always lock your car when you leave it parked.

June 11th: **Hey Parents!** The Terrace Theater, Lowcountry Parent, and the Post and Courier present the eighth Family Film Series. Kids $10 and under are free, everyone else is $4.

June 21st: On James, at the Charleston Pour House, it’s Solstice Muffin, an event to ring in the first official day of summer & the longest day of the year. Live music includes Dangermuffin, Mama’s Love, Les Racquet, Dallas Baker and Friends, Wallace Mullinax, Bobby Hogg, and the Deer Creek Sharp Shooters.

It’s a busy Mother’s Day weekend out on the Sea Islands.

I am excited to see the new issue of Dirt from the City Paper has arrived. Why? Because it highlights Lowcountry agriculture, and many local farms are located right here on the sea islands south of Charleston, like Johns, James, Wadmalaw and Yonges. [To be fair, parts of Daniel Island and Mount Pleasant, north of Charleston, have some farms, too.]

Now how about the new fresh crop of events happening this weekend?

FRIDAY (the 9th)

9am: On Wadmalaw, Ambrose Family Farm is open for u-pick strawberries until 5pm.

9am: In North Charleston, at multiple locations, the 2014 North Charleston Arts Festival is underway. The NCAF has lots of free and very affordable events, like Spoleto pre-1989. This festival continues through May 10th.

11am: On Johns (Main Road heading to Savannah Highway), the Main Road Farmers Market, brought to you by Charleston Petal Pushers, is open until 6pm. Fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, frozen prepared food (like yummy Bertolini pasta and pasta dishes), natural compost fertilizer, muscadine wreaths, bedding plants, tropical plants, local grits, local honey, Amish jams, and homemade boiled peanuts are just some of the goodies you will find here. Please bring cash or check to make purchases. I had the privilege to talk to the owners Chris DeStefano and Lindsay Dickson recently, I will be sure to post the link when the story runs in the West Of Newspaper.

4pm: On James, Charleston Pour House, it’s Jimmy Landry and Friends on the deck. This is a free show.

8pm: On Johns, at Seanachai, the Travelin’ Kline is playing. This bar doesn’t serve food, but you can order Southern General food from your barstool. The General also has two happy hours: one you might expect from 4-7pm, and a second one at 10.

8pm: On James, at the Brickhouse Kitchen, it’s local favorite the Louie D Project performing funk, jazz, hip-hop, and rock.

8pm: On James, at Midtown Productions, a new show has opened: Duck Hunter Shoots Angel, a play by Mitch Albom. You may know Albom’s work from books like Tuesdays with Morrie and The Five People You Meet in Heaven. Albom was interviewed on CBS Sunday Morning in the last couple weeks, click the link to see it.

10pm: On James, at the Charleston Pour House, live music is a Widespread Panic tribute band, Machine Funk. Show is $8 in advance, $10 at the door. Doors open at 9. See website for tickets and more information.

10pm: On James, the Bohemian Bull has Yellowknife playing. PS-Don’t forget, the Bohemian Bull serves food late into the evening.

SATURDAY (the 10th)

8am: On James and Folly, it’s the sixth annual Leslie McCravy 5k Run and Walk benefitting James Island’s Pet Helpers. McCravy was a victim of domestic violence in 2007. Friends and family teamed up to create this event to honor her memory and help an organization that was really important to her.

8am: In West Ashley, at Middleton Place, it’s the Run to Momma 5-15k, benefitting Palmetto House, a shelter for women and children. You can register before the race if you have not already.

8:30am: On Daniel Island, it’s the 2014 Mom’s Run, a 5k at Blackbaud Stadium to benefit postpartum depression support efforts in Charleston. Register between 7 and 8am before the race if you haven’t done so already.

9am: On Wadmalaw, Ambrose Family Farm is open for u-pick strawberries until 5pm.

10am: In Red Top which is up Savannah Hwy. past the Main Road intersection, Lowcountry Marsh Sweepers are doing a litter pickup. Meet at the Red Top Welcome Center. If you are driving through this area, please exercise caution for pedestrians.

12pm: On James, Tradesman Brewing Co.’s tasting room is open until 8pm.

12pm: On Wadmalaw, at Irvin-House Vineyards, it’s Sippin’ Saturday with music by gutter-country act Whiskey Diablo and food by Chucktown Mobile Seafood. Please bring cash, lawn chairs, blankets, and bug spray. But please, no coolers.

1pm: On James, at the Charleston Pour House, live bands are Cane Creek bluegrass string band and Grant Farm. This is a kid-friendly event.

8pm: On Johns, at Seanachai, blues and soul piano man Ed Porkchop Meyer is playing. This bar doesn’t serve food, but you can order Southern General food from your barstool. The General also has two happy hours: one you might expect from 4-7 pm, and a second one at 10.

8pm: On James, at Midtown Productions, it’s the final performance of Duck Hunter Shoots Angel, a play by Mitch Albom. You may know Albom’s work from his sports journalism career, or novels like Tuesdays with Morrie and The Five People You Meet in Heaven. Albom was interviewed on CBS Sunday Morning recently, click the link to see the interview.

9:30pm: On James, at the Charleston Pour House, Sierra Leone Refugee AllStars are playing. Show is $15 in advance and $18 at the door. Doors open at 8:30pm.

10pm: On James, the Bohemian Bull has Ryan Bonner playing. PS-Don’t forget, the Bohemian Bull serves food late into the evening. The Charleston City Paper made this late night menu a Critics Pick in the most recent Best Of Charleston issue.

10pm: On Folly, at Surf Bar, bluegrass act Cattle in the Cane is playing.

SUNDAY (the 11th)

8-11am: On James, the Coastal Cyclists will be cycling from James, to Kiawah and back, about 40 miles total. Please drive and pass carefully.

11am: On James, the Sunday Brunch Farmers Market features food trucks, local farmers, and local vendors. Live music is also on site. Now open until 2pm.

4pm: On James, at the Charleston Pour House, it’s Sunday Phunday with Runaway Gin playing Phish covers on the deck. Roti Rolls food truck will be in attendance. This show is free. Check out the new deck bar. There is no later act scheduled at this time.

6pm: On Folly, at the Grill and Island Bar, it’s Jazz on the Edge. Food and drink specials, and an open jazz jam by over 22 local jazz talents. Click link for details.

9:30pm: On James, at the Charleston Pour House, it’s kiwi-reggae! Katchafire with Maoli Treehouse. It’s $13 in advance and $15 at the door. Doors open at 8:30.

On James, at the Terrace Theater, the following films open today: Dancing in Jaffa (Israeli and Palestinian children learning to ballroom dance) and Fading Gigolo (John Turturro, Woody Allen, Liev Schrieber, Vanessa Paradis, Sharon Stone, Sofia Vergara). Also playing are the post-WWII drama The Railway Man (Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman), the unlikely female friends comedy The Other Woman (Leslie Mann, Cameron Diaz, and Kate Upton).

May 11th: It’s Mother’s Day weekend. Downtown, the College of Charleston and the Citadel are holding their graduations. At the Greek Orthodox Church Downtown, the Charleston Greek festival happens all weekend long, offering church tours, jump castles for this kids, delicious gyros and other Greek food, Greek dancing, and arts and crafts sales.

WEEKLY: On James, the Brick House Kitchen has Food, Beverage, and Entertainer Discount Mondays. Tuesdays are a Drum Circle Night followed by a Graham Whorley show and an artists’ market. Wednesday evenings, it’s just $25 for a bottle of wine, and a fruit and cheese plate.

Events for the First Weekend of May

It’s a busy weekend out on the Sea Islands.

Now how about the new fresh crop of events happening this weekend?

Saturday is the Kentucky Derby. Expect to see specials on mint juleps at local bars. Sports bars are your best bet for watching the race, including James Island’s Smoky Oak Taproom, the Lowdown Oven and Bar, and Johns Island’s New Moon Pizzeria. In West Ashley, the Beach Bar is having a party and giving a prize for best hat. Downtown at Johnson Hagood Stadium, there’s also a Derby Party being held by the Junior League of Charleston.

It’s also the weekend before Cinco De Mayo. 3 Matadors (West Ashley) will be partying all weekend, Mex 1 Coastal Cantina and Yo Bo Cantina Fresca will be holding parties on Saturday, and ChaChas (James Island) is holding their party Monday the 5th.

ALL WEEKEND LONG AND BEYOND

On James, at the Terrace Theater, the following films open today: the “gangster dramedy” Dom Hemingway (Jude Law) and the rock documentary Mistaken for Strangers (starring real-life brothers Tom and Matt Berninger). Also playing are the post-WWII drama The Railway Man (Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman) and the unlikely female friends comedy The Other Woman (Leslie Mann, Cameron Diaz, and Kate Upton), The Lunchbox (an Indian film that was a hit at the Toronto and Sundance film festivals), Bears (narrated by John C. For a bite to eat before or after, Zia Taqueria, Crust WoodFired Pizza (check out my interview here), and How Art Thou Café are just steps away. If you take a quick sprint across the street, you’ll find Charleston’s best indie music spot, The Pour House, and its excellent farm to table restaurant, The Lot. The Lot’s Chef Lira has really made a name for himself in our area since relocating from New York in 2012. He recently showcased his talents at last month’s Wine and Food Festival Downtown.

WEEKLY: On James, at Smoky Oak Taproom, Mexi-Mondays mean margarita pitchers and steak and shrimp fajitas. There are budget-friendly dinner specials announced all week long if you “Like” their Facebook page.

May 10th: On James and Folly, it’s the sixth annual Leslie McCravy 5k Run and Walk benefitting James Island’s Pet Helpers.

May 11th: It’s Mother’s Day weekend. Downtown, the College of Charleston and the Citadel are holding their graduations. At the Greek Orthodox Church Downtown, Charleston Greek festival happens all weekend long, offering church tours, jump castles for this kids, delicious gyros and other Greek food, Greek dancing, and arts and crafts sales.

May 17th: On Johns, at Freshfields Village, it’s Cars and Coffee at Java Java.

May 24th: Downtown, the March Against Monsanto starts at 11am on Ann and Meeting Streets.

June 11th: The Terrace Theater , Lowcountry Parent, and the Post and Courier present the eighth Family Film Series. Kids $10 and under are free, everyone else is $4.

Spring is the most beautiful season we have in this area–the trees are covered in seed pods and blooms, and the bushes are covered in blooms. If this season tends to aggravate your allergies, don’t forget the tissues, allergy meds, and eye drops. For dawn and dusk hours, bring bug spray as the “no-see-ums” (a.k.a sand flies, midgies) are already back and spring rains mean the mosquitos aren’t far behind.

It’s a busy weekend out on the Sea Islands. Hopefully from now on we will have no more cold spells, just the occasional spring rains.

FRIDAY (the 25th)

Please be advised all Charleston County Public Libraries are closed today for staff training, but they re-open tomorrow.

Today is the last day to register for the “Where the Wild Things Run” 5k at Caw Caw Interpretive Center & County Park. It is tomorrow morning at 8:30am. It’s $34 for entry, and just $28 for Charleston County residents. Activities for children ages 6-12 will keep the kids busy while their parents run.

9am: On Wadmalaw, Ambrose Family Farm is open for u-pick strawberries until 5pm.

11am: On Johns (Main Road heading to Savannah Highway), the Main Road Farmers Market brought to you by Charleston Petal Pushers is open until 6pm. Fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, frozen prepared food, natural compost fertilizer, muscadine wreaths, bedding plants, tropical plants, local grits, local honey, Amish jams, and homemade boiled peanuts are just some of the goodies you will find here. Please bring cash or check to make purchases. 4pm: On James, Charleston Pour House, it’s Jimmy Landry and Friends on the deck. This is a free show.

6pm: On Johns, at Freshfields Village, there’s an outdoor concert series out on the Green. This week’s live music will be played by Port Authority, a party band playing lots of 1960s and 1970s hits, spanning shag, Motown, and rock n’ roll genres. Bring your blankets and beach chairs. Because this is an outdoor event, if it rains, this event will most likely not happen.

11am: In North Charleston, at Riverfront Park, it’s the Charleston County Earth Day Festival starting at 11am.

12pm: On James, the new Tradesman Brewing Co.’s tasting room is open until 2pm, and reopens at 6pm today. From 3-7pm, they will be at Bohemian Bull.

12pm: On Wadmalaw, at Irwin House Vineyards, it’s Sippin’ Saturday with music by Kristi Starr and Gary Hewitt and food by Stono Cafe. Please bring cash, lawn chairs, blankets, and bug spray. But please, no coolers.

There will also be a local artists and craftsmen’s work on display.

SIDG: Events for the Third Weekend of April

We’ve had four seasons in one week here on the Sea Islands. Even if you’re coming here to enjoy warm temperatures, it doesn’t hurt to pack a cardigan or windbreaker just in case.

Please be advised it’s going to be a wet weekend. Wear boots or other rain-ready shoes and have a poncho handy. And now, on with the weekend roundup. It’s Easter weekend. While many businesses might take Easter off, there’s a fair amount of stuff happening that day.

FRIDAY (the 18th)

4pm: On James, Charleston Pour House, it’s Jimmy Landry and Friends on the deck. This is a free show.

6pm: On Johns, at Freshfields Village, there’s an outdoor concert series out on the Green. This week’s live music will be played by Shem Creek Boogie Band. If it rains, this event will most likely, not happen.

8pm: On James, at the Brickhouse Kitchen, Big Daddy Cade is playing. Big Daddy Cade is an official BB King impersonator, so expect some smokin’ blues.

9:30am: On Johns, check in for Lowcountry Local First’s Farm Tours is at Sun Dog Cat Moon Vet Clinic on Maybank Highway. Please be aware of extra traffic on country roads all morning and afternoon for these tours. If you’re going, pack snacks or bring cash to buy lunch fresh from the farm.

10am: On Johns, The Johns Island Farmers Market is held near the Main and Maybank intersection next to Dr. Anthony Ross’ Island Chiropractic. It has over 50 vendors, including local farms, artisans, specialty food products. There are also food trucks and live music. If you wanted to put together a basket of homemade goodies for yourself or someone else, you could easily do all your shopping here.

10:30am: In West Ashley, Magnolia Plantation is holding multiple Easter Egg Hunts today. The hunt, geared for the toddler age group, begins now. Bring your own baskets.

10:30am: In West Ashley, Middleton Place is holding an Easter Eggstravaganza. Kids should bring their own basket. Stables will feature egg-dyeing, and there will stories and colonial games. Families can enjoy Middleton’s regular amenities, too.

10:30am: Downtown, the Charleston Hat Ladies are gathering for their 14th Easter Promenade. Click link for details.

11am: On Johns, at Freshfields Village, there’s an Easter Festival geared towards younger children, including a jump castle, an inflatable obstacle course, an Easter bunny for photos. Live music performer John Cusatis will hire impromptu bandmates from the audience for an interactive performance. Kiawah and Seabrook artists guilds will be showing their work. There will be Barrier Island marine boats on display. Food and drink will available for purchase.

11am: On James, Bohemian Bull is serving brunch specials until 3. Brunch isn’t always easy to find on the islands, but you’ll definitely want to check out Johns Island spots like Wild Olive, Fat Hen, Sweeneys, Angel Oak Restaurant, and James and Folly spots like Heart Woodfire Kitchen, La Tabella, and Blu Restaurant (Folly). Three Little Birds is a good pick in West Ashley just over the Wappoo bridge.

11:30am: On Folly, an Easter Promenade on Center Street is happening.

12pm: On Wadmalaw, it’s Sippin’ Saturday at Irvin House Vineyards, featuring food by Linen’s BBQ and live music by the blues guitar and harmonica band the Bullgrapes. Please bring lawn chairs, blankets, and cash for food. No coolers, please.

12pm: On James, at the Charleston Pour House, it’s a Food Truck Court. Live music includes a Schema band reunion (funk and trip-hop genre) and BYOG (jam band featuring baritone sax) playing until 6:30 p.m.

12pm: In North Charleston, at Smokey’s Place, its the Mommafest Blues Jam benefitting the Ronald McDonald House.

1pm: On James, at the Terrace Theater, Disney’s live action Bears movie premieres. At 12:30pm, Magnolia Plantation’s Chris Smith will be in the lobby with some creatures from Magnolia’s zoo. The animal demonstration is free with the purchase of a ticket to the movie. It benefits the Goodall Institute that helps protect wild chimpanzees. Keep the movie ticket to receive $1 off Magnolia’s $15 garden admission price. The redemption expires April 30. 2:30pm: On James, at the Terrace Theater, Disney’s live action Bears movie second show starts now. 11am: On James, the Sunday Brunch Farmers Market features food trucks, local farmers, and local vendors. Live music is also on site. This weekend, there will be a kids Easter Egg Hunt.

6pm: On Folly, at the Grill and Island Bar, it’s Jazz on the Edge. Food and drink specials, and an open jazz jam by 22+ local jazz talents. Click link for details.

On James, at the Terrace Theater the following films are playing: The Lunchbox (Indian film that was a hit at the Toronto and Sundance film festivals), Casablanca (1942, starring Ingrid Bergman, Humphrey Bogart), Nymphomaniac Vol II (Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skaarsgard), Bad Words (Jason Bateman, Allison Janney), The Lego Movie (numerous celebrity voices), Le Week-end (Jim Broadbent, Jeff Goldblum, Lindsey Duncan) is about a mature couple returning to their honeymoon spot, Paris, to rekindle their spark, and The Grand Budapest Hotel (too many actors to name). WEEKLY: On James, the Brick House Kitchen has Food Beverage and Entertainer discount Mondays. Tuesdays are a drum circle followed by a Graham Whorley show and an artists’ market.

April 22nd: On James, at the Charleston Pour House, it’s an Earth Day Family Fun Jam. This event is free and starts at 10pm. If you play, bring your instrument.

April 24th: All over town, it’s Dine Out for Life to benefit AIDS research and the Ryan White Foundation. If you don’t know Ryan White’s story, click his name to learn more.

April 26th: In West Ashley, at the Caw Caw Interpretive Center & County Park, there’s a run starting at 8:30am. It’s $34 for entry, just $28 for Charleston County residents. Registration is available until the day before. Activities for children ages 6-12 will keep the kids busy while parents run.

April 26th: In North Charleston, at Riverfront Park, it’s the Charleston County Earth Day Festival starting at 11am.

May 1st: In West Ashley, Charlestowne Landing is holding the first of several 5ks throughout May and into June. Click the link for more information.

May 3rd: It’s Kentucky Derby weekend. Expect to see specials on mint juleps at local bars. Sports bars are your best bet for watching the race, including James Island’s Smoky Oak Taproom, the Lowdown Oven and Bar, Johns Island’s New Moon Pizzeria. Downtown at Johnson Hagood Stadium, there’s a Derby Party being held by the Junior League of Charleston.

It’s another busy weekend out here on the Sea Islands.

FRIDAY (the 11th)

On Folly, it’s the Sea and Sand Festival starting today. This event benefits Folly Beach Parks & Recreation. Saturday, there’s the Coffin Island 5K. Click links for event information.

1pm: On Kiawah, its the Gibbes Museum Kiawah Art & House tour until 5pm. $55 admission includes the tour, refreshments, and future admission to the Gibbes Museum of Art. Click the link to purchase tickets.

4pm: On James, Charleston Pour House, it’s Jimmy Landry on the deck. This is a free show. Check out the new deck bar.

7pm: Sol Driven Train is performing at the James Island County Park as part of the East Coast Paddlesports Festival all weekend long. Show is $10 per person (ages 13+) or FREE for all ECPO festival registrants and kids 12 and under.

8pm: On Johns, at Seanachai, folk tribal and fiddle band Contraforce are playing. This bar doesn’t serve food, but you can order Southern General food from your barstool. The General also has two happy hours: one you might expect from 4-7pm, and a second one at 10.

9pm: On James, at the Charleston Pour House, it’s sci-fi and Middle Eastern fusion band Consider the Source and Bubonik Funk. The doors open at 9pm. It’s $8 in advance.

10pm: On James, the Bohemian Bull has New Galaxy playing. PS-Don’t forget, Bohemian Bull serves food late into the evening. The Charleston City Paper made this late night menu a Critics Pick in the most recent Best Of Charleston issue.

SATURDAY (the 12th)

8am: On Johns, at Legare Farms, it’s the Mega Mud Run Challenge for ages 16 and up. Per their website, its destination is Insanity Island. This is a true test of balance and stability!!! The tight rope walk is a 70′ trek over the infamous Turtle Creek with only an overhead rope to hold on to for stability. Click the link for more information.

9am: On Folly, it’s racetime for The Coffin Island 5K, part of the Sea and Sand Festival. Click links for event information.

12pm: On James, the Brickhouse Kitchen is holding an all-day Reggae jam called Treefest. Live music by TreeHouse, South Street, Sun-Dried Vibes, Ben Fagan & The Holy City Hooligans, and Jahman Brahman.

12pm: On Wadmalaw, it’s Sippin’ Saturday at Irvin House Vineyards, featuring food by Autobahn (sandwiches with pan-Asian and global flair) and live music by Gracious Day. Please bring lawn chairs, blankets, and cash for food. No coolers, please.

12pm: On James, at the Charleston Pour House, it’s a Food Truck Court with the Trainwrecks, Bret Mosley, and Guilt Ridden Troubadour playing until 6:30 p.m.

1pm: On James, at the James Island Christian Church (JICC), rain or shine, it’s the Taste of James Island Churches. All are welcome. The JICC is behind the McDonalds on Folly Road, which is just a couple blocks from the Maybank Hwy. and Folly Rd. intersection.

8pm: On Johns, at Seanachai, the bluegrass/folk ensemble South Carolina Broadcasters are playing. This bar doesn’t serve food, but you can order handcrafted sandwiches, homemade soup, or a hearty plate of poutine (Canada’s cheese and gravy fries) from your barstool. At the Southern General, there are two happy hours: one you might expect from 4-7pm, the second one starts at 10pm.

10pm: On James, at the Charleston Pour House, it’s Dumpstahunk with Stankface featuring Elise Testone, David Grimm, Stuart White, Alan Brinsendine, Adam Fallen, and Kanika Moore. This show is $17 in advance and $20 at the door. See website for tickets and more information.

The azaleas will be blooming, live classical music will be playing, and gourmet delicacies will be served at this event reviving a Charleston Renaissance tradition. Proceeds benefit a Garden project named for André Michaux, a botanist who collected samples here for the French government in the colonial era. See link for more information. The title derives from the quote “There are known knowns and unknown knowns, the absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence.” Its director, Errol Morris, previously created The Fog of War, focusing on another former Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara who got the U.S. into the Vietnam conflict. Other films playing include Lego Movie (numerous celeb voices), Le Week-end (Jim Broadbent, Jeff Goldblum, Lindsey Duncan) is about a mature couple returning to their honeymoon spot, Paris, to rekindle their spark, and The Grand Budapest Hotel (too many actors to name). WEEKLY: On Johns, Red’s Ice House at Bohicket has all you can eat crab legs on Mondays for $29, Happy hour 4-7pm, and Dave Landeo Band performing live. Every Tuesday is food and beverage (F&B) workers night, with late night appetizer specials, happy hour 4-7pm, $2 vodkas, and Hank Futch & Friends playing live acoustic music. Oyster roasts are on Thursdays, it’s just $12 for a bucket of oysters and two Buds.

On April 19th: Disney’s live action Bears movie premieres at the Terrace at 1pm. Magnolia Plantation’s Chris Smith will be in the lobby with some creatures from Magnolia’s zoo a half-hour before this show and the one at 2:30pm. Downtown, the College of Charleston and the Citadel are holding their graduations, and Greekfest at the Greek Orthodox Church all weekend long, offering church tours, jump castles for this kids, delicious gyros and other Greek food, Greek dancing, and arts and crafts sales.

As always, whatever you get into, have fun and please be safe. Spring is the most beautiful season we have in this area–the trees are covered in seed pods and blooms, the bushes are covered in blooms. If this season tends to aggravate your allergies, don’t forget the tissues, allergy meds, and eye drops. For dawn and dusk hours, bring bug spray as the “no-see-ums” (a.k.a sand flies, midgies) are already back and spring rains mean the mosquitos aren’t far behind.
