Here are some photos from a today’s visit to the Southern General (SG), which is on page 32 of the dining guide.
I am delighted to report that recent coverage in the City Paper has been a boon to business.
Today we enjoyed fries, some craft beers (Dogfish Indian Brown Ale, Highland’s Razor Wit, National Bohemian (Natty Bo)), and most importantly, the Turkey Giardinera and Cubahn-Mi sandwiches.
Giardiniera is an Italian tradition. It’s a pickled vegetable medley of onions, celery, zucchini, carrots, and cauliflower. In the States, red bell peppers and/or jalapeño peppers are substituted for onions and zucchini.
SG’s Giardiniera had a little bit of heat and it was under the turkey. Also over the turkey was a creamy yogurt spread. [By the way, all sandwiches come with pickled cucumber and shredded carrot salad. Fries and chips can be added if you like.

If you didn’t already know, Bahn-Mi is a hot and spicy, thin-sliced beef sandwich from Southeast Asia, and a Cuban sandwich is ham, pork belly, cheese and pickles squished between two thick buttered slices of Cuban bread.
Now Imagine that Havana meets Hanoi: Cubahn-mi.
Next time, I think we should try their poutine or one of their burgers. Or both.
As we headed out, I noticed these delicious bowls of noodle and other cold salads and soups in a refrigerated case. Shown in the top photo below is Sweet Potato Garlic Kimchi (Korean pickled spicy cabbage) and the other is Roasted Corn Maque Choux (Cajun corn and pork stew). What a great idea for a super-quick lunch or dinner if you are really pressed for time. Salads could be paired with a pint of homemade ‘Soup of Yesterday’. And any of these can be a thoughtful meal for a friend stuck at home or coworker at their desk.
SG has a changing list of craft beer by the can and bottle.
Friday and Saturday nights, there are two happy hours–one at the traditional 4-7 timeframe, and the second starts at 10pm and extends to close.
If you are at Seanachai next door, you can order SG food, and it will be delivered to your barstool or table.
If you are on Johns Island I hope you will check the Southern General out.
Happy eating!
